Preferred Education and/or Experience: A Master Degree in Fisheries Management or a related field. Prior experience in fisheries management and/or the treatment of aquatic nuisance plants is preferred. |
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Knowledge of the principles of biology, ecology, and related environmental sciences. Knowledge of game and fish management programs including propagation, cultivation, and harvesting techniques. Knowledge of game and fish laboratory and field survey equipment, techniques, and procedures. Ability to plan, organize, and oversee the work of subordinates. Ability to make public presentations and conduct hunter safety classes. Ability to plan work unit objectives and operational activities and to assign and direct the work of subordinate supervisors. Ability to conduct scientific game and fish surveys and studies. |
Preferred Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Knowledge of freshwater aquatic plants and related management techniques. Skill in writing (both technical and popular articles). Skill in the maintenance and operation of boats, outboard motors, fish sampling equipment, etc. Skill in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software programs. Ability to exercise sound judgment and reasoning in decision making and problem solving. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public, stakeholders, and Arkansas Game and Fish Commission staff. Ability to implement project management techniques and practices (scheduling/task management) to ensure completion of programs and projects in an effective and timely manner. Ability to write and edit technical reports in a timely manner. Ability to professionally explain Project, Division, and Agency programs, policies, and procedures to the public and other stakeholders.

Job Summary: As a Fisheries Habitat Biologist for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, you will join a highly-trained, progressive team of Fisheries Scientists working to improve lake and reservoir habitat across the state of Arkansas. You will receive outstanding training as well as competitive pay and benefits. Fisheries Habitat Biologists are responsible for leading efforts in all aspects of the AGFC statewide Reservoir Habitat Team. Specific job duties for this position include: propagating/planting native aquatic vegetation, working with contractors to treat invasive aquatic vegetation, creating natural/artificial fish attractors, planning/executing large-scale lake renovation projects, implementing the Agency Land Use Policy (boathouse and pier permits, personal property encroachments, etc.), evaluating the efficacy of habitat improvement practices, supervising a Fisheries Habitat Technician, and other duties as assigned. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) Biologist is responsible for supervising wildlife and timber management in a wildlife management area. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy. |
Typical Functions: Coordinates and participates in conducting biological surveys and studies of fish and wildlife to determine population growth, propagation rates, and the effect of environmental and human conditions on particular species. Participates in developing wildlife management area recommendations and the development of the five-year plan for future Game and Fish activities and acquisitions. Approves billings and projects expenditures and assists supervisor in preparing the district budget. Conducts hunter safety classes or public meetings on new and proposed rules and regulations. Writes news releases on activities in the district. Performs other duties as assigned. |
Specific Duties and Responsibilities: As a Fisheries Habitat Biologist for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, you will join a highly-trained, progressive team of Fisheries Scientists working to improve conservation and management of aquatic resources in Arkansas. You will receive outstanding training and competitive pay and benefits. Fisheries Habitat Biologists are responsible for water level management, riparian landowner relations, and reservoir habitat activities in a district, with many opportunities to work on other projects in the district and across the state. Specific job duties for this position include: administration of the AGFC Land Use Policy around district lakes (boathouse and pier permits, personal property encroachments, etc.), water level management for Lake Conway, boat lane maintenance, fish habitat improvement projects including nuisance aquatic vegetation control, assisting with district fish population sampling activities, and working with landowners, contractors, AGFC Enforcement Division personnel, other agencies, and elected officials on issues related to the above duties.
This position is located in Central Arkansas in the Arkansas River Valley, with most work taking place on four AGFC-owned reservoirs. This position works under the supervision of the District Fisheries Management Biologist out of the AGFC Mayflower Field Office.

Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations: Must possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license. Successful candidates possessing Certified Fisheries Professional status with the American Fisheries Society are eligible for a 6% salary increase. |
Special Job Dimensions: Frequent in-state travel and field work with exposure to inclement weather is required. Occasional exposure to hunters and dangerous animals may be required. |
