Job Summary:

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) Biological Technician II is responsible for habitat and maintenance projects on Wildlife Management Areas. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:

Conducts on-the-ground habitat and maintenance projects on Wildlife Management Areas, hatcheries, and public waters.

Conducts research and monitoring efforts.

Oversees structure and facility maintenance and operations.

Serves as regional nuisance animal coordinator.

Trains new technicians regarding the collection and research of fish, blood, water, soil, and plant species, and examination of animals and specimens to detect diseases or other problems; participates in the review of new technicians’ work processes.

Reviews and researches samples and data, develops conclusions, and makes recommendations regarding analyses.

Serves on statewide species teams.

Supervises and directs contractors conducting work on Wildlife Management Areas to ensure work is completed according to the contract.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists program coordinators, habitat biologists, and field biologists in the planning, preparation, and implementation of approved projects in wildlife management areas
  • Conducts wildlife and habitat forest management activities on wildlife management areas.
  • Monitors and operates wildlife management area infrastructure, including levees, roads, parking lots, water control structures, waterways, campsites, etc.
  • Conducts operations in compliance with state and federal regulations such as fire safety, accident prevention, vehicle operation, pesticide application, and waterway drainage.
  • Conducts management activities on wildlife management areas, including; manipulation of various habitat types depending on the region and area assigned
  • Monitors assigned wildlife management areas for vegetative and wildlife-invasive species and assists in control efforts
  • Collects or assists in collecting biological samples and entering data
  • Collects biological data for wildlife monitoring and research
  • Calibrates and operates wildlife management equipment, such as seed drills, planters, weed eaters, chainsaws, lawnmowers, ATVs, boats, tractors, dozers, backhoes, rollers, sprayers, and others as necessary
  • Serves as a member of the agency's prescribed burn program and assists with the
  • implementation of prescribed burns on state-managed WMAs
  • Cleans, maintains, prepares, and supplies work areas
  • Supervises and directs contractors conducting work on Wildlife Management Areas to ensure work is completed according to contract specifications
  • Supervises and directs activities of interns and extra labor employees
  • Trains junior employees in proper completion of all activities listed above
  • Participates in the review of junior employees’ work processes
  • May serve on statewide working groups and teams
Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations:

Must possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license.

Special Job Dimensions:

This position requires the person to be able to stand for long periods, work around water, lift heavy loads, bend, and push.

This position requires a small amount of travel for continuing education and assistance to other areas and regions.

This position regularly operates heavy equipment and handles chemicals that may be dangerous if handled improperly. It also handles explosives and propellants when trapping animals or managing nuisance animals, such as beavers.

Other Specific Information:
  • Frequent interaction with hunters and other outdoor recreationists and exposure to live animals
  • Heavy physical demands in inclement weather
  • Some travel for continuing education and statewide assistance is necessary
  • Regular operation of heavy equipment and handling of dangerous chemicals
  • Some overnight travel
