Preferred Education and/or Experience:

A bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, conservation biology, natural resources, environmental science, or a related field plus one year of experience in a related field

A master’s degree in wildlife biology, conservation biology, natural resources,

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
  • Knowledge of the principles of biology, ecology, and related environmental sciences
  • Knowledge of game and fish management programs including propagation, cultivation, and harvesting techniques
  • Knowledge of game and fish laboratory and field survey equipment, techniques, and procedures
  • Ability to plan, organize, and oversee the work of subordinate.
  • Ability to make public presentations and conduct hunter safety classes
  • Ability to plan work unit objectives and operational activities and to assign and direct the work of subordinate supervisors
  • Ability to conduct scientific game and fish surveys and studies
Preferred Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
  • The ability to safely operate a large farm tractor with implements
  • A basic understanding of wetland habitat management and moist soil management practices
  • One year of supervisory experience

Job Summary:

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) Biologist I is responsible for supervising a wildlife or fisheries management area.  This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:

Coordinates and participates in conducting biological surveys and studies of fish and wildlife to determine population growth, propagation rates, and the effect of environmental and human conditions on particular species

Participates in developing wildlife management area recommendations and the development of the five-year plan for future Game and Fish activities and acquisitions

Approves billings and project expenditures and assists the supervisor in preparing the district budget  

Conducts hunter safety classes or public meetings on new and proposed rules and regulations

Writes news releases on activities in the district   

       Performs other duties as assigned

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plan, coordinate, and directly oversee/implement the day-to-day work activities on Earl Buss Bayou DeView and St. Francis Sunken Lands Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) and assist with implementing habitat improvement practices on other WMAs
  • Supervise at least one additional employee focused on similar objectives
  • Collect and submit scientific data and specimen samples for analysis, write reports, maintain records, and present oral and written information
  • Operate and maintain large agricultural tractors and implements as well as ATVs and UTVs
  • Will be required to carry out specialized agricultural practices to improve habitats in both upland and wetland areas
  • Must assume a proactive role in assisting in the development of area budgets, maintaining ledgers and records, managing budgets, and submitting reports
  • Coordinate with other field biologists, habitat biologists, program coordinators, and supervisory staff to develop and implement habitat plans for wetland and upland habitats
  • Provide technical assistance to the public in resolving nuisance wildlife problems and provide advice and technical assistance to landowners
  • Oversee and direct water level management and identify repair and maintenance upkeep needs for commission equipment, machinery, properties, and capital improvements
  • Coordinate with regional maintenance coordinator to budget and carry out maintenance and new development items
  • Prepare materials for public presentations and gives presentations to various organizations
  • Perform a variety of other tasks as needed within the region, other AGFC Divisions, or other areas of the state
  • Will be required to receive specialized training and certifications in, but not limited to, prescribed fire, chemical immobilization of animals, and pesticide application
  • Occasional overnight travel to attend various training, seminars, or assignments may be required
  • Perform strenuous and physically demanding tasks and work outdoors year-round in inclement weather
  • May be required to work certain holidays and weekends

Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations:

Must possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license

Special Job Dimensions:
  • Frequent in-state travel and field work with exposure to inclement weather 
  • Occasional exposure to hunters and dangerous animals

  • Frequent interaction with hunters and other outdoor recreationists and some exposure to live animals
  • Heavy physical demands in inclement weather
  • Regular operation of heavy equipment and handling of chemicals that may be dangerous if handled improperly

  • The successful applicant will be required to obtain a Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator license within the first year of employment.
