Minimum Education and/or Experience: The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus six years of experience performing vehicle mechanic work, including one year in a leadership capacity. Preferred Education and/or Experience: ASE certifications are preferred but not required |
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Knowledge of the mechanical and electrical operations and maintenance of most motor vehicles and systems. Knowledge of manufacturer's specifications and recommendations for diagnosis, testing, and repair of motor vehicles. Knowledge of the mechanical operation of diesel and gasoline engines. Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and failures and recommend required repairs, as necessary. Ability to make mechanical adjustments for service and repair of motor vehicles. |

Job Summary: The Auto/Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance and care of a fleet of motor vehicles. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy. |
Typical Functions: Provides service, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles and performs complex testing and diagnostics, to troubleshoot problems using computers and scanners. Rebuilds automobile and diesel engines, heavy equipment, and transmissions including the removal and disassembly of defective parts. Performs diagnostic and system checks to determine what repairs are necessary, and makes recommendations for required maintenance. Prepares estimates of time, parts, and materials needed to make repairs and orders mechanical parts and equipment as needed. Prepares various forms and log sheets of maintenance records for vehicle reports and compares invoices to records and processes for payment. Designs, fabricates, and welds cabs, truck beds, and trailers. Performs other duties as assigned. |
