Preferred Education and/or Experience:

A bachelor's degree in biology, fisheries, wildlife management, or a related field is preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of the procedures and methods used in wildlife management.

Knowledge of the equipment and techniques used to maintain buildings, grounds and equipment.

Knowledge of wildlife biology and the associated techniques used in wildlife management. Knowledge of agricultural methods and basic land laws.

Ability to identify common plants and animals found in Arkansas. Ability to collect biological samples.

Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.

Ability to operate and maintain wildlife management equipment safely and effectively.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
  • Knowledge of or experience in current fish propagation techniques
  • Good oral and written communication skills and ability to work well with others
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point) and Google apps
  • Ability to learn quickly and work independently as well as under direct supervision
  • Willingness to work on weekends as necessary
  • Will occasionally be required to work long hours under harsh conditions / inclement weather
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a pesticide applicator license and a commercial driver's license
  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment used at a fish hatchery (e.g., fish distribution trucks, tractors, feeder, pumps).

Job Summary:

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) Biological Technician I is responsible for habitat and maintenance projects on Wildlife Management Areas. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:
  • Assists program coordinators, habitat biologists, and field biologists in the planning, preparation, and implementation of wildlife habitat management and maintenance projects on wildlife management areas
  • Conducts wildlife and habitat management activities on wildlife management areas.
  • Monitors and operates wildlife management areas infrastructure, including levees, roads, parking lots, water control structures, waterways, campsites, etc.
  • Conduct operations in compliance with state and federal regulations such as fire safety, accident prevention, vehicle operation, pesticide application and waterway drainage.
  • Monitors assigned wildlife management areas for invasive species and assists in control efforts.
  • Collects or assists in collecting biological samples and entering data. Collects biological data for wildlife monitoring and research.
  • Calibrates and operates wildlife management equipment, such as seed drills, planters, weed eaters, chainsaws, lawn mowers, ATVs, boats, tractors, dozers, backhoes, rollers, sprayers and others as necessary.
  • Serves as a member of the agency's prescribed burn program and assists with the implementation of prescribed burns on state-managed WMAs. Specific physical fitness demands for prescribed burning are required.
  • Cleans, maintains, prepares, and supplies work areas.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The selected individual will be responsible for assisting in the operation of an intensive culture trout facility. Job responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining and disinfecting fish rearing tanks, raceways, and circular tanks
  • Feed fish, and harvest, load, and deliver fish for stocking in waters throughout the state
  • Assist other hatcheries
  • Assist in the care and maintenance of eggs and fry
  • Monitor fish health and administer prescribed treatments
  • Perform general upkeep of the hatchery buildings, grounds, vehicles, and various fish production equipment
  • Operate distribution trucks, tractors, fish loaders/pumps, and grounds maintenance equipment
  • Participate in public outreach and education activities
  • Operate and generate reports on computer-based programs; other duties as deemed necessary
  • Handle work and projects that require heavy physical activity
  • Travel away from the duty station for short periods. Occasional weekends and some holiday work are also required.
Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations:

Must possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license.
