Job Summary:

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) Veterinarian is responsible for leading the state’s wildlife and fisheries health program, directing health and disease research, and providing veterinary medical support to AGFC programs throughout Arkansas. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Typical Functions:
  • Assists with programs to prevent, control, and manage disease in fish and wildlife
  • Provides veterinary technical support for conservation programs, including anesthesia,    surgery, and forensics
  • Responds to licensed veterinarians and citizens regarding fish and wildlife issues
  • Assists with educational seminars on diseases
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Knowledge of the principles of biology, ecology, and related environmental sciences
  • Knowledge of game and fish management programs
  • Knowledge of game and fish laboratory and field survey equipment, techniques, and procedures
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of state purchasing procedures
  • Ability to plan work unit objectives and operational activities and to assign and direct the work of subordinates
  • Ability to make public presentations
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex information in a simple, acceptable format
  • Ability to plan and direct scientific game and fish surveys and studies
  • Ability to plan work unit objectives and operational activities and to assign and direct the work of subordinates
  • Ability to develop, implement, and monitor wildlife management plans and programs
  • The person selected for this position will collaborate with external partners (state, federal, university, and non-government), and participate in regional and national groups relevant to the field

Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations:

Must be licensed as a Veterinarian by the Veterinary Medical Examining Board in accordance with ACA 17-101-301.
Must possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license.

Other Specific Information:

The AGFC Wildlife Veterinarian will be housed within the Research Division, a support division within AGFC whose mission is to act as a specialized unit supporting the AGFC and its divisions through exploration, evaluation, and monitoring of the best available science. The conservation professionals of the Research Division are a highly focused team who share a strong respect for each other's profession and work closely to ensure the division successfully serves the agency.

The successful candidate will serve as the agency's Wildlife Veterinarian and provide the agency with a high-functioning level of expertise in this scientific field. This individual will be expected to be a leader in this field and represent the AGFC locally, regionally, and nationally. AGFC’s Wildlife Veterinarian will supervise the agency’s Wildlife Health Biologist and directly oversee a statewide program.  This individual must possess the ability to work directly with various professional biologists throughout all levels and divisions of the agency to accomplish necessary tasks.  It is expected that this position has the ability to serve as a valuable team member on essential projects, and also the capacity to lead large-scale, impactful projects.
