Minimum Education and/or Experience:

Must be a full-time student enrolled in the 2018 spring semester in an accredited college or university, completed a minimum of 60 semester hours as of May 1, 2018, declared a major and have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.  Must also meet one of the following criteria:  a resident of Arkansas enrolled in any college or university; a resident foreign exchange student enrolled in an Arkansas college or university; or, a nonresident enrolled in an Arkansas college or university.  Applicant must demonstrate prior coursework or knowledge related to work area.  Selected intern will coordinate directly with their college or university to obtain course credit for their work.

Preference given to applicants with experience using or knowledge of current fish sampling techniques. An ability to work long hours, sometimes under harsh or physically demanding conditions, and a strong teamwork concept are required.
Good computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point), good writing skills, strong organizational skills, and ability to complete tasks without close supervision are prefered.

Job Summary:

The AGFC’s internship program allows students to gain practical experience and meet hands-on training requirements necessary to earn their degrees and gain valuable career-oriented experience.

Students participating in the competitive internship program are provided an opportunity to:

  • Gain important and practical job skills in the conservation field while helping AGFC meet education and conservation goals;
  • Choose a career path in conservation and make a long-term commitment to the management of Arkansas's natural resources;
  • Network with public and private agencies concerning environmental programs and projects.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist District Fisheries personnel with sampling fish populations and building fish habitat structures.  Assist Fish Hatchery staff with culture of multiple fish species. Perform basic manual labor, including maintaining levees and performing maintenance and repair work on equipment. Other duties as assigned.  

Other Specific Information:

SALARY:

$12.75 per hour (maximum of 400 hours).  Flexible work schedule available during May, June, July, and August.
